Traveling via the Greyhound bus is one of the most inexpensive ways to move around the country. Most people choose Greyhound over flying or traveling by rail because of the price. But did you know that there are ways to get even greater discounts off your greyhound bus tickets everyday? Listed below are 5 methods that I use on a regular basis to save money when purchasing Greyhound bus tickets.
1. Book Your Ticket 2+ Weeks in Advance
Greyhound offers some pretty sweet discounts if you book your ticket 2 or more weeks in advance. This is one of my favorite discounts to take advantage of because the savings are so big. I routinely save up to 50% off the normal ticket price for my trips just by buying my tickets early.
For example, a cross country trip from Florida to North Dakota that normally would have cost around $209 only cost me $99 because I took advantage of the advance purchase discount.
You don’t need any special codes or coupons either, the discount will automatically be calculated for you when you are buying your ticket.
2. Book Your Greyhound Bus Ticket Online
You can save yourself some serious cash just by booking your Greyhound bus ticket on the internet instead in person at the station or over the phone. I travel on Greyhound on a pretty regular basis and I always book my ticket online.
You can expect to save somewhere around 10-20% off regular ticket price when you use Greyhound.com or the mobile app to purchase your ticket.
The mobile app especially makes it easy to book online. You can now buy a Greyhound bus ticket anytime – from anywhere, in minutes!
3. Travel Mid-Week on Tuesdays & Wednesdays
In an effort to bolster travel on traditionally lower traffic days, Greyhound now offers discounts for traveling on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I always prefer to travel mid-week anyway because the buses are less crowded and the stations are emptier. Being able to get an extra 5-20% off my ticket price for traveling on these days is extra icing on the cake.
Greyhound.com states that to receive the maximum discount on Tuesdays and Wednesdays you should travel early in the morning before 10 a.m.
4. Take Advantage of Promo Codes
From time to time Greyhound releases promotional codes that give you an additional discount on your bus ticket. These promo codes provide instant savings in addition to any other discounts you are already taking advantage of on your purchase.
Most Greyhound promo codes expire after a month or so but if there is currently a valid promo code you will be able to find it on the Discounts & Promo Codes page of this website.
5. Sign up for Road Rewards
Greyhound Road Rewards is a great way to earn some pretty good discounts on bus travel. It’s free to join and you instantly get 10% off your next Greyhound bus ticket just for signing up.
After you are a Road Rewards member you start earning points with each trip you take on the Greyhound bus. For example, a round trip ticket earns you two points. These points add up and you become eligible for more discounts and savings with the more points you accrue.
Some of the rewards you can earn are a free ticket for a companion, discounts on food at Greyhound bus stations, and eventually you can even earn a free trip on Greyhound.
I’ve highly recommend that everyone who travels on Greyhound sign up for the Road Rewards program. You can learn more about all the rewards offered and signup on the Greyhound website here.
